An army of liberation, taken on the way.

They marched out complete — soldiers, wizards, alchemists, banners, provisions, and four thousand years of being certain. Not one of them arrived where they were going.

The world on the other side does not run on the power their magic drinks. The greatest wizards of their age come through the fire and cannot light a candle with it. And the city waiting below the mesa was built by two peoples who managed without them.
